Mid Year Benchmark Assessments
Our 3rd-5th grade students will be taking their mid year benchmark assessments this week. 5th graders will be taking their science test next week. The data from these assessments helps teachers see which of the students are grasping which concepts and standards and ultimately helps them plan their instruction going forward after we return from Christmas. Please encourage your kids to do their best on these assessments.
White Christmas Canned Food Drive
Evergreen Packaging sponsors this food drive each year. We kicked it off last Friday, 12/3, and the last day is on Monday, 12/13. The winning class will receive a pizza party.Thank you in advance for your generosity and for modeling kindness and giving for your children.
Book of the Month
We’ve gotten started a few months late on our “Book of the Month” this school year, but better late than never. Our December selection is entitled “A Different Pond” by Bao Phi. Each of our 27 classes has a copy of the book. Students will take turns checking the book out from the classroom. The point of this is for the student to read the book with his/her parents and discuss it. The book has talking points and discussion questions glued to the inside cover. Our books this year are all tied to our social/emotional learning program, Second Step. Within that program, classroom teachers teach lessons that are also emphasized in Mrs. Cavner’s guidance classes. Some of the topics include having empathy, playing fairly, using calm down strategies, and problem solving skills…among others. For more info about this program go to their website at https://www.secondstep.org/elementary-school-curriculum
