Shout Out for Fall Decorations

We want to give a great big shout out to the following local businesses for helping us make our campus look festive this fall:Duckett’s Produce – pumpkins

Lowes of Waynesville – mums

Riverview Farm & Garden – hay bales

We’d also like to thank Jade Crawford, 1st grade teacher, for spearheading the gathering of the supplies and the decorating.

Covid Guidance Update

The most current Covid guidance for students and staff returning after a positive test and subsequent 5 days out of work/school is that they “should” wear a mask for 5 days upon returning. Note that the guidance says “should” as opposed to “must” and make your decisions based on that language.

Possible Upcoming Inclement Weather

The following is Dr. Nolte’s press release regarding the incoming weather:The path of Hurricane Ian is still uncertain. However, current projections predict the storm will pass through Western North Carolina. The large size and slow movement of the storm increase the possibility of potential damage. Currently, it appears flooding rainfall and high winds are possible this weekend. Rain is expected to begin in the middle of the day on Friday and continue into next week.

If in-person learning is cancelled due to inclement weather, we are likely to designate the day as Remote Learning Optional Workday (RLOW) with front-loaded learning for students. Teachers should prepare appropriately and notify students that a RLOW may be needed Friday or early next week. Please keep this possibility and practice in mind as we move into the late fall and winter.

The Morning Crew always monitors these situations. If in-person learning is cancelled, an announcement will be made no later than 5:45 a.m. on the impacted school day. Any announcements will be made through our rapid notification system and other school system notification processes. If in doubt, please check multiple sources (HCS website, HCS social media, and local media outlets).

Fall Picture Day

Fall Picture Day is Thursday, October 6. (4th grade students will have their photos taken BEFORE they go on their field trip to the County Fair.)An informational flyer will be coming home soon.

Food Truck Fundraiser

On Tuesday, October 11, the Fat Belly’s food truck will be at BES from 4:00-7:00 pm. This is in conjunction with one of our Book Fair Family Nights that week. The food truck will be open to anyone and everyone in the community on that evening, not necessarily just folks associated with BES. Please tell everyone who you think might not want to cook supper that evening! BES will receive a portion of the proceeds from the evening from the sweet owners of Fat Belly’s.

BookOWeen Volunteers Needed

On Monday, October 31, we will be having our annual BookOWeen during the school day. Teachers and staff dress up and act out books for our students so we need volunteers to walk groups of students from performance to performance. The more volunteers we have the better supervised our students are and the more fun everyone is able to have. If you’re interested in volunteering all or part of the day or if you have questions, please send me an email at hhollingsworth@haywood.k12.nc.us
